A long-term view of the recorded by the US Border Patrol arrests of illegal immigrants clearly shows that the number of border crossings from Mexico to the United States has risen steadily since the 1960s. After peaking at more than 1.6 million in 2000, the numbers have fallen sharply and are now at the level of the early 1970s. While around 304,000 people were apprehended last year, the figure for this fiscal year from October 2017 to the end of May 2018 has so far been just over a quarter of a million.
