When Amazon introduced the Amazon Echo in 2014, many thought that the smart speaker would help the company sell even more things online by giving consumers another convenient way to place an order. And while the Echo and the entire line of Alexa-enabled devices that followed can only be described as a resounding success for Amazon, this is the one aspect where it probably failed to live up to expectations.
According to a comScore surveyconducted in the first quarter of 2018, only 3 in 10 smart speaker owners have ever placed an order via the device. The reasons for this are varied, but security concerns are the biggest barrier to wider adoption of purchasing via smart speakers. Interestingly, this seems to be where smart speaker owners, who seem to have no qualms about placing a listening device in their home, draw the line.
