When Amazon introduced the Amazon Echo in 2014, many thought that the smart speaker would help the company sell even more things online by providing another convenient way for consumers to place an order. And while the Echo and the entire line of Alexa-enabled devices that followed can only be described as a resounding success for Amazon, this is the one aspect where the company has likely fallen short of expectations. According to a comScore survey from the first quarter of 2018, only 3 in 10 owners of a smart speaker have ever placed an order via the device. The reasons for this are varied, but security concerns are the biggest barrier to wider adoption of purchasing via smart speakers.
