Autonomous delivery drones (Glossary)

Autonomous delivery drones are small, flying robots that independently deliver parcels or goods from one place to another. They do not need a human to control them, but use sensors and special software. They recognise obstacles, choose the best flight route and deliver the parcel directly to the front door or to a pick-up station.

An illustrative example: an online shop sells electronic goods. As soon as a customer orders something, the parcel is picked up by an autonomous delivery drone and flown directly to the customer's address. The drone automatically flies around obstacles such as trees or houses and lands gently in the garden or on a drone landing platform.

Autonomous delivery drones can make deliveries faster and more environmentally friendly, especially in cities with heavy traffic or in remote locations. Companies rely on this technology to shorten delivery times and save costs. They also help to reduce the number of cars on the roads, which in turn protects the environment.
