ChatOps (chat-driven IT operations) is a term used in the fields of automation, digital transformation and HR work and teams. It refers to a modern way of working in which teams perform central IT tasks directly via chat platforms such as Slack or Microsoft Teams. Instead of executing commands via complicated programmes or terminals, employees type simple instructions into a chat - the rest runs automatically in the background.
This allows software teams, for example, to start a new server, analyse errors in systems or install updates via chat without leaving the chat window. ChatOps therefore brings the technology to where teams communicate all the time anyway. This saves time, makes processes more transparent and simplifies collaboration - because everyone can see immediately what is being done.
A practical example: A team wants to know whether the web shop is running. Someone writes "Website status?" in the team chat. An integrated bot checks the system and answers directly in the chat whether everything is working or whether there are any problems. This keeps everyone informed, avoids misunderstandings and speeds up the response to technical problems. ChatOps is therefore an important building block for modern, agile collaboration in companies.
