Controller (robot control) (Glossary)

The term controller (robot controller) is particularly at home in the fields of robotics, automation, industry and Factory 4.0. It refers to an important component that ensures that a robot does exactly what it is supposed to do.

A controller is the "brain" of a robot. It controls all movements, processes and tasks. For example, when a robot arm assembles car parts in a car factory, the robot controller ensures that the arm adheres exactly to the specified movements - repeatedly, precisely and reliably.

Think of the controller as a remote control for the robot, but much more intelligent. Humans can use it to give the robot instructions, upload programmes or even teach it new tasks. Modern controllers for robot control are usually computerised and can be flexibly adjusted to different tasks.

In practice, the controller (robot controller) helps to automate processes and avoid errors. This makes production processes faster, more precise and often cheaper. Precise robot control is indispensable, especially for repetitive tasks.
