Cyber deception (Glossary)

Cyber deception is particularly relevant in the areas of cybercrime and cybersecurity, digital society and digital transformation. The term describes methods used by fraudsters to trick people or computers into believing false information or into doing something they would not otherwise do. The aim of cyber deception is usually to obtain sensitive data such as passwords or bank information or to cause damage.

An everyday example of cyber deception is so-called "phishing". This involves a person receiving an email that looks like it comes from a trustworthy source, such as a bank or a large online shop. The message often claims that you need to check your details or change your password. If the recipient clicks on the link in the email and enters their details, these end up directly with the fraudsters.

Cyber deception is particularly dangerous because the fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated and the deceptions can hardly be distinguished from genuine messages. Companies and private individuals should therefore pay particular attention to suspicious emails, links or websites and always be suspicious when asked for confidential information.
