Data access control is particularly important in the areas of big data and smart data, cybercrime and cybersecurity as well as Industry and Factory 4.0. It describes the rules and mechanisms that determine who is authorised to access which data in a company. The aim is to protect sensitive information and ensure that only authorised persons can view or process certain data.

Imagine a company collects large amounts of customer data. Without data access control, all employees could access all data, regardless of whether they really need it. This poses major risks, such as data misuse or unauthorised data disclosure. Targeted data access control ensures that, for example, only the HR department has access to salary data, while marketing can only access anonymised customer trends.

Well-implemented data access control therefore ensures greater security and data protection. It helps companies to fulfil legal requirements and strengthen the trust of customers and partners. Ultimately, it protects the company from data loss and cyberattacks that could result from unauthorised access.
