The number of people American universities enrolled international students fell by 4 per cent between 2016 and 2017. This is according to an analysis of data from the Department of Homeland Security by the National Foundation for American Policy emerged. One of the main reasons for the decline is a drop in the number of Indian students enrolled in computer science and engineering programmes last year. Their numbers fell by 21 per cent and there were 18,590 fewer students enrolled in these courses in 2017.

They provide billions of dollars to the economy every year and graduates have made a vital contribution to some of the country's most successful businesses. The Trump administration's plans to restrict job opportunities for international students after graduation could accelerate the negative trend.
