The digital supply chain is particularly at home in the areas of digital transformation, Industry and Factory 4.0 as well as eCommerce and digital commerce. It describes the modern, digital control and monitoring of goods and information flows within a company and along the entire supply chain - from production to the customer.
While many processes in the supply chain used to be carried out manually or by telephone, fax and paper, the digital supply chain now utilises digital tools and networked systems. This enables companies to get their products to the end customer faster, more reliably and often more cost-effectively. Digital technologies such as sensors, cloud software and artificial intelligence record in real time where a product is located, how high the stock level is or when replenishment is needed.
An illustrative example: an online retailer always has an overview of how many T-shirts of exactly which colour and size are in stock. With the help of digital data, it can reorder immediately when demand increases and guarantee its customers punctual delivery times. In this way, the digital supply chain ensures satisfied customers and greater efficiency within the company.
