Display positioning

After working with AdSense for a while, you've probably wondered if there's anything you can do to increase your AdSense profits. But before you start experimenting with different setups, there are a few things you should know about positioning.

The most profitable adverts are usually located within the main content, usually directly above it. However, this is not a hard and fast rule and there are certain exceptions. A recognised example is a news page or a page that is close to a new page. When this is the case, you will often find that positioning your advert at the bottom of the content, just before the comments, will bring in more revenue. This is because consumers have a short period of time after finishing a story where they are looking for something else to do. And your AdSense ad can give them that something.

Also, placing adverts on the left-hand side of your page almost always seems to work better. This makes sense, of course, because text is often written from left to right (except in a few countries where the spelling is the other way round). People finish a statement and then turn their eyes back to the left, which increases the likelihood that they will see your adverts.

It's also about more than just placing adverts in the right places. If you have more than one advert, you also need to consider where they are placed in the code. And there's a good reason to think about this. AdSense displays the adverts in the order in which they appear in the source code. So if the first advert you insert into the code is not the one that brings in the most money, you can quickly end up losing money instead of earning more. This is because when AdSense runs out of ads, it fills the gap with public service ads or leaves it blank. If you're unlucky, your most profitable pages may not have any good ads at all to boost your revenue.

There are other considerations when deciding how many adverts to place on your website. The difficulty is that too many adverts would not lead to more revenue, but to a lower click-through rate, as users are less likely to follow adverts in places where they are excessive.

You need to constantly monitor how users interact with your website. Pay attention to the areas of your website where visitors spend most of their time. This is where you should usually place your first adverts.

Also avoid placing adverts in distracting places, as this leads to a lower click-through rate. Of course, you should always place adverts that harmonise with your content and do not make the visitor's visit to your website unpleasant.

The aim is to offer your visitors an enjoyable experience and at the same time generate revenue from their exploration. Again, the best revenue is generated through trial and error. Use AdSense's channel feature and watch how the different ads perform on your pages and adjust their placement to increase your profits.
