Edge-native AI (Glossary)

Edge-native AI is at home in the categories of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and Industry and Factory 4.0. The term describes a special form of artificial intelligence (AI) that is used directly on the end devices or "at the edge" of the network, i.e. close to the data source - instead of centrally on large servers in the cloud.

This means that sensors or machines in a factory, for example, do not have to send their data to the internet to be analysed. Instead, a small but powerful AI system takes over this task directly on site. As a result, decisions are made more quickly and less data traffic is sent to the internet. In addition, edge-native AI increases data security, as sensitive information does not have to leave the company premises.

An illustrative example: In a modern factory, a camera with edge-native AI can immediately recognise when a product is faulty and stop the machine straight away without having to wait for it to be analysed in a cloud. This makes production processes faster, safer and more efficient - a real competitive advantage for companies in Industry 4.0.
