2017 was another record year for the Sale of electric carsof which over one million were sold worldwide. The total number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road exceeded three million last year, an increase of 50 per cent compared to 2016. 720,000 of these are on the road in the United States, while 820,000 are in circulation in Europe. Electric car technology is also gaining ground in China. With a total of 1.23 million vehicles, China has the largest fleet of electric cars.
A report from the International Energy Agency provides an overview of the global market for electric cars in 2017. With 579,000 vehicles sold, China had by far the highest sales of battery electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV) of all countries. The market share is 2.2 per cent, which is higher than in the USAwhere e-vehicles only have a 1.2 per cent share of the car market.
In the USA, 198,350 electric cars were purchased last year, while 118,770 were sold in France. Norway is known for its preference for electric cars and has boosted its market with generous incentives and excellent infrastructure. In 2017, sales were still strong with 62,260 electric cars and a market share of 39 per cent. In developing countries, where the infrastructure and quality of roads are far from mature, the technology is still struggling to spread. Last year, only 2,000 electric vehicles were sold in India and a disappointing 300 in Brazil.
