Mastering ethics guidelines: KIROI step 5 for managers

4.4
(1694)

Ethical guidelines are an indispensable tool for managers to provide orientation in the complex business world. The fifth KIROI step in particular emphasises their importance as the basis for responsible and sustainable leadership. This step helps managers not only to understand ethical principles, but also to actively implement them in their day-to-day work and thus promote a culture of integrity.

Ethical guidelines as guidelines for sustainable corporate governance

Ethics guidelines serve as binding guidelines that make the behaviour of employees and managers transparent and comprehensible. They contain clear guidelines for dealing with customers, suppliers and colleagues and promote a corporate culture based on integrity, respect and fairness[1][5]. They are therefore an important means of avoiding conflicts of interest and establishing processes that promote transparency.

For example, a technology company communicates the responsible handling of sensitive customer data in its ethics policy. A manager ensures that all employees comply with data protection in a standardised manner and that violations are reported immediately. At the same time, regular training sessions raise awareness of respectful behaviour in the workplace. In this way, compliance and practised values go hand in hand.

In another practical example from the service industry, a manager established an ethics platform on which employees can anonymously report concerns or misconduct. This supports open dialogue and helps to continuously develop ethical standards and identify violations at an early stage.

Last but not least, a manufacturer of consumer goods showed how ethical guidelines play a role in supplier selection. By clearly prohibiting business with suppliers that have violated environmental or human rights standards, the company is setting a sustainable example - and at the same time strengthening the trust of its customers.

KIROI step 5: Actively live and communicate ethical guidelines

The fifth KIROI step recommends that managers not only see ethical guidelines as static documents, but also as a living part of corporate practice. This includes communicating the guidelines transparently and integrating them into daily work. Managers act as role models here by consistently exemplifying the values and principles themselves[2][4].

In the marketing department, for example, a manager initiated monthly workshops in which ethical issues relating to advertising measures are discussed. This practice promotes ethical awareness within the team and supports responsible brand communication.

A manager in the financial sector systematically integrated ethical considerations into risk management decision-making processes. This means that not only financial aspects are taken into account, but also social and environmental impacts. This increases the credibility of the organisation enormously.

In HR, ethics can be seen in the consistent promotion of diversity and inclusion, which is anchored in the ethics guidelines. HR management specifically supported diverse applicants and created a working environment in which all employees feel valued. This not only improves the working atmosphere, but also boosts innovation.

BEST PRACTICE with one customer (name hidden due to NDA contract) The manager systematically integrated ethical guidelines into all decision-making processes and anchored them clearly in the corporate culture. Regular training and actively living the values created an environment in which employees feel obliged to act ethically and at the same time support the company's success. This led to a noticeable increase in trust among customers and employees.

Practical tips for implementing ethical guidelines in day-to-day management

Managers can make ethics policies more effective and integrate them into their role by:

  • Create understandable and clear communication channels to make ethics rules transparent and accessible.
  • Introduce regular ethics workshops and training courses to sensitise employees and encourage them to exchange ideas.
  • Establish a feedback culture that provides space for ethical discussions and views mistakes as learning opportunities.

Another example shows the importance of personal commitment: a manager from production took the time to discuss ethical case studies directly with teams. The open discussion promoted understanding and a sense of responsibility among the employees and strengthened the community.

My analysis

Ethical guidelines are essential for managers to create a sustainable and responsible corporate culture. They help to make complex decisions from a moral point of view and create a transparent basis for trust. KIROI Step 5 illustrates how managers can integrate ethical principles in a practical way. Actively implementing and exemplifying ethical guidelines not only strengthens the credibility of the company, but also promotes employee commitment and identification.
