US President Donald Trump withdrew from the Paris Climate Agreement almost a year ago and recently instructed Energy Secretary Rick Perry to subsidise unprofitable coal and nuclear power plants. However, Trump's pro-coal policy does not seem to match the trends in energy consumption in the United States. According to a Study by BP the US energy mix has changed in favour of natural gas and renewable energies and has fallen slightly compared to the previous year, ahead of coal and nuclear power.
Comparing the development of the Energy consumption in the G7 countries, several trends can be identified. While all countries have increased their share of renewable energy in the last year, Germany and the UK are leading this trend. Surprisingly, Japan seems to be reducing its oil consumption in favour of increased production of nuclear energy, although the Fukushima incident in 2011 drastically reduced public support for this energy source.
