Green IT is particularly important in the areas of sustainability, Environment 4.0 and digital transformation. The term describes all measures to make information technology (IT) more environmentally friendly. The aim is to reduce energy consumption and the environmental impact of computers, data centres, networks and software.
A simple example: a company decides to use a central, energy-efficient data centre instead of many power-hungry computers in individual offices. The computers are powered by green electricity and set to consume as little power as possible in standby mode. This saves resources and costs while protecting the environment.
However, green IT is not just about energy. It also includes the environmentally friendly disposal of old hardware, the use of recyclable materials and durable devices as well as the avoidance of electronic waste.
Green IT is an opportunity for companies to work more sustainably and improve their own image - and often even with cost benefits. Anyone who values sustainability and efficiency should therefore look into green IT.
