Since 1990, surplus Goods of the Ministry of Defence worth around 6 billion dollars to the US law enforcement agencies. Under the 1033 programme, all kinds of items, from laptops to assault rifles, have been transferred from the military to law enforcement. These fall into two categories - controlled items (such as drones or helicopters) and uncontrolled items (such as office furniture and tools). Even though the militarisation of the police has become increasingly controversial, especially after Ferguson when mine-protected vehicles and heavily armed officers appeared on the streets, the flow of weapons has continued unabated.

A current RAND analysis of the situation found that the value of uncontrolled transfers from fiscal years 2015 to 2017 totalled $1.2 billion, while controlled items were worth $775 million. RAND found that the current value of all Department of Defence surplus property owned by Law enforcement authorities in the USA is 1,888,559,339 $.

The following infographic takes a closer look at a selection of equipment from the analysis and its current value. There are 849 mine-protected vehicles in use by US law enforcement agencies, valued at just under $583 million. Elsewhere on the list, 64,689 5.56-millimetre rifles have been transferred to law enforcement agencies, valued at $27.83 million, while the total for all aircraft in the programme is around $433 million.
