The number of people American universities enrolled international students fell by 4 per cent between 2016 and 2017, according to an analysis of Department of Homeland Security data by the National Foundation for American Policy. One of the main reasons for the decline is the drop in the number of Indian students enrolled in computer science and engineering programmes last year. Their numbers dropped by 21 per cent and in 2017, 18,590 fewer students were enrolled in these courses.
The report warns that the decline in the number of international students could have a serious impact on the US economy. Every year they bring billions of dollars into the economy and graduates have made a vital contribution to some of the country's most successful businesses. The Trump administration's plans to restrict job opportunities for international students after graduation could accelerate the negative trend.
The infographic below shows the number of international students in the US from 2012 to 2017. In 2012, the number of students was 633,000, rising to 840,160 by 2016. Given the decline last year, the total number in 2017 was 808,640, with 367,920 at the graduate level and 44,720 at the undergraduate level.
