A context window indicates how much text an AI model can view and process at once in order to generate meaningful answers. The larger this window is, the more information from the previous conversation or section of text the AI can absorb - similar to a human reading an entire chapter and not just a paragraph. In the past, LLMs could only remember a few sentences. Today, large context windows are possible: for example, the AI can analyse entire emails, contracts or several pages of text and talk about them without losing track.
An example: An HR department would like to have a long chat with an AI. Thanks to large context windows, the AI "knows" what has already been asked throughout the conversation and does not give duplicate answers. This makes communication smarter and more efficient.
