Lebanon still harbours by far the most refugees in relation to its population. According to the latest figures from the UNHCR 164 refugees per 1,000 inhabitants found refuge in the small country on the eastern Mediterranean at the end of 2017. These figures only include refugees under the UNHCR mandate. If the Palestinian refugees under the UNRWA mandate (some of whom have been living in Lebanon for 70 years) are included, the figure rises to 250 refugees per 1,000 inhabitants.
Although Turkey is only in third place in relation to its population, it is the country that has taken in the most refugees overall. At the end of 2017, it was home to 3.5 million refugees, most of whom fled there from the fighting in neighbouring Syria.
