LiDAR in robotics is primarily used in the fields of robotics, automation and artificial intelligence. LiDAR stands for "Light Detection and Ranging" and describes a technology that enables robots to recognise their surroundings. Here, a LiDAR sensor emits laser beams and measures how long it takes for the light to hit an object and return. This creates precise three-dimensional maps of the environment.

LiDAR is used in robotics to enable robots to recognise obstacles, navigate and work independently. Autonomous robot hoovers in particular utilise this technology. They "scan" the home while travelling, detecting furniture, walls and even objects lying around. This means they always know exactly where they are and how best to get around obstacles.

Another example is Industry 4.0, where driverless transport systems use LiDAR to move goods safely and efficiently in large factories without colliding with people or machines.

To summarise: LiDAR in robotics helps machines to "see" their environment and move around it intelligently and safely.
