Low-performance edge AI (Glossary)

(765)

Low-power edge AI is particularly relevant in the areas of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and Industry and Factory 4.0. This term describes small, economical AI systems that work directly on devices or machines on site (i.e. at the "edge") - instead of first sending large amounts of data to central servers or the cloud.

In contrast to high-performance AI, which requires a lot of computing power and often expensive hardware, low-power edge AI works on low-cost, energy-efficient chips that consume little power. It specialises in solving simple tasks quickly and reliably without having to pass on data to external servers.

An illustrative example: a sensor on a production machine uses low-power edge AI to recognise whether a component is faulty. The decision is made immediately on site without having to send large amounts of data to the internet. This saves time, reduces costs and improves data protection.

Low-performance edge AI therefore enables smart applications where simple, fast and reliable decisions are required - for example in factories, in smart homes or for small, networked devices in everyday life.
