Machine-to-Machine (M2M) (Glossary)

(816)

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) is particularly at home in the Internet of Things, automation, industry and Factory 4.0. The term describes direct communication between technical devices without the need for human intervention. The aim of machine-to-machine (M2M) is to make processes faster, more efficient and often more cost-effective.

A simple example: In a modern factory, sensors constantly monitor the temperature of machines. If a machine gets too hot, the sensor reports this directly to the maintenance system, which automatically initiates maintenance. This means that repairs can be carried out quickly before major damage occurs.

Machine-to-machine (M2M) is also used to improve logistics processes: A lorry continuously sends the location and temperature data of its load compartment to the control centre. If limit values are exceeded, the control centre immediately receives a warning and can react.

Machine-to-machine (M2M) makes many processes smarter and more flexible. Especially in industry and the Internet of Things, M2M is an important step on the way to fully automated processes and Industry 4.0.
