The term malware belongs to the fields of cybercrime, cybersecurity and digital society. Malware is the abbreviation for "malicious software". It describes programmes that are secretly installed on computers, tablets or smartphones in order to cause damage or steal data.
Malware can, for example, enter a device as an attachment in an email, via fake websites or by downloading unsafe apps. A typical example is the so-called "virus" attack: a user opens an attachment in a deceptively genuine email without realising that it contains a malicious programme. As soon as the file is opened, the malware infects the device, can collect data and spread unnoticed.
The consequences of malware are manifold: passwords, personal data or even company secrets can be stolen, computers can be rendered unusable or hackers can extort money for the release of blocked data. Malware is therefore one of the biggest threats to digital security - for both private individuals and companies. Regular updates, strong passwords and a conscious approach to unknown links and attachments offer protection.
