Mobile robotics (Glossary)

Mobile robotics is particularly at home in the fields of automation, industry and Factory 4.0 as well as in the field of robots.

Mobile robotics refers to robots that can move independently to perform certain tasks. Unlike stationary robotic arms, which are fixed in one place, these robots move on wheels or tracks through factories, warehouses or even public areas.

A well-known example of mobile robotics are the small, autonomous vehicles in large warehouses of online retailers. They pick up products from the shelves and bring them to the employees who pack them. The robots use cameras and sensors to orientate themselves and plan their routes independently to avoid collisions.

Mobile robotics makes processes faster, more flexible and often more cost-effective. Companies benefit from greater efficiency and less human labour for monotonous or dangerous tasks. The introduction of such technologies is an important step on the way to the "smart" factory and supports the digital transformation of many industries.
