Neural Machine Translation (NMT) (Glossary)

Neural Machine Translation (NMT) is a term used in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital transformation, eCommerce and digital commerce. It describes modern translation systems that use artificial neural networks to automatically translate entire sentences or texts from one language into another.

Compared to conventional translation programmes that translate individual words or short phrases, Neural Machine Translation (NMT) can recognise the context and meaning between the words in a sentence. This often makes translations much more natural and easier to understand.

For example, if an online shop wants to offer its product descriptions to international customers, Neural Machine Translation (NMT) can translate the German texts into many other languages - and much better than older translation technologies. This means that even a customer in Spain can understand the product details almost as if they had been written by a native speaker.

NMT is used today in services such as Google Translate or DeepL and helps companies to overcome language barriers. This makes it quicker and easier to establish business relationships worldwide without having to hire expensive human translators for each language.
