Neuronal cellular automata (Glossary)

Neural cellular automata are an exciting topic in the field of artificial intelligence, digital transformation and Industry 4.0. This concept combines two modern technologies: artificial neurons, as used in neural networks, and cellular automata, which use simple rules for many small units.

Imagine a large carpet made up of many small fields. Each field decides for itself how to behave - depending on what is happening in its immediate neighbourhood. If these many small fields work together, they can jointly solve large tasks or recognise patterns. Neuronal cellular automata go one step further: they learn with the help of artificial intelligence and adapt their rules.

A practical example: In the modern quality control of a factory, such machines could be used to detect material defects in real time. Each "field" monitors a small section and immediately passes on any deviations. This creates a learning system that recognises faulty products before they are processed further.

Neuronal cellular automata are therefore adaptive mini-helpers that ensure automated and self-optimising processes, especially in industry and artificial intelligence.
