The term next-generation firewall (NGFW) originates from the fields of cybercrime, cybersecurity and digital transformation. A next-generation firewall (NGFW) is a modern security solution that protects networks and data better than conventional firewalls. While conventional firewalls primarily only monitor data traffic on specific ports and IP addresses, an NGFW can also recognise and fend off more complex threats such as viruses, hacker attacks or so-called "phishing".
The special thing about a next-generation firewall is that it works "intelligently": It analyses incoming and outgoing data, checks emails and files for suspicious content, for example, and automatically blocks conspicuous activities. This means that hidden malicious code that normal firewalls would overlook can also be detected.
A practical example: An employee in a company tries to open an infected e-mail. The next-generation firewall recognises the malicious element immediately and prevents it from causing any damage. An NGFW therefore not only protects the company network, but also the company's sensitive data - a must for every modern company.
