Prompt chains (prompt chaining) are a term used in artificial intelligence and digital transformation. They describe a method in which several consecutive instructions - known as prompts - are used to solve complex tasks step by step with the help of AI, such as ChatGPT.
Instead of asking the AI a long or complicated question, a simple prompt is entered first. The answer to this serves as the basis for the next prompt, and so on. This chain method achieves better and more targeted results because the AI receives new information at each step and takes it directly into account.
An illustrative example: You want to write a report on digital trends with an AI. First, you enter the following prompt: "List current digital trends." You then take one of these trends, such as "Artificial intelligence in marketing", and ask: "Describe the most important applications of artificial intelligence in marketing." In the next step, you could then ask: "Use this to formulate a short summary for a blog post."
Prompt chains help to control the performance of AIs in a targeted manner and refine the desired results step by step.
