Quantum algorithms (Glossary)

(1173)

Quantum algorithms belong to the category of artificial intelligence and digital transformation. They are special computing methods that run on quantum computers. Unlike conventional computers, quantum computers work with so-called qubits and can therefore check several possibilities at the same time. This makes quantum algorithms particularly fast for tasks that would take extremely long for today's computers.

An illustrative example is the search in huge databases. While normal computers have to go through each option individually, quantum algorithms can search through many entries simultaneously. This means that certain problems, such as finding relevant information in large data sets or cracking complex encryption, can be solved much more quickly.

Quantum algorithms are particularly important today for the future. They could be used in artificial intelligence, for example, to recognise patterns in big data even better. They are also playing a growing role in digital transformation, for example for faster financial transactions or more secure data encryption. Nevertheless, many applications are currently still at the testing stage, as quantum computers themselves are only just being developed.
