The term "responsible data processing" is particularly important in the areas of big data and smart data, cybercrime and cybersecurity as well as the digital society. It describes how companies and organisations handle the data of customers, users or employees with care. This involves protecting privacy, complying with laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and only using data for authorised purposes.

Responsible data processing means, for example: If an online shop stores personal information such as name, address and payment data, it ensures that unauthorised persons cannot access it. It only uses the data for the order and does not simply pass it on to third parties. Customers must also be able to understand what their data is used for and consent to this use.

The aim of responsible data processing is to build trust and minimise risks such as data misuse or cyberattacks. It is an important component of modern, digital business models and protects the rights of every individual in our increasingly networked world.
