Self-healing systems are particularly at home in the fields of automation, industry and Factory 4.0 as well as cybersecurity. The term describes technologies that are able to recognise and rectify errors or faults independently - without any human intervention. The aim is to avoid failures and improve the reliability of machines, networks or software.

Imagine a production line in a modern factory stopping due to a fault. A self-healing system would automatically detect the problem, analyse it and find a solution, for example by reconfiguring a spare part or distributing the workload to other machines. This allows production to continue without major delays.

Self-healing systems are also very useful in the area of cybersecurity: if a vulnerability is discovered in the network, the system automatically closes it or isolates the affected area before any major damage occurs.

Self-healing systems help companies to minimise downtimes, save costs and make their processes safer. In Industry 4.0 in particular, they are an important step on the way to an intelligent, automated factory.
