Sensor data fusion is an important term in the fields of automation, industry and Factory 4.0 as well as the Internet of Things. It refers to the intelligent merging of data collected by different sensors. The aim is to obtain a more accurate or complete picture of a situation than would be possible with just a single sensor.

Imagine, for example, a modern car that uses cameras as well as radar and ultrasonic sensors. All of these sensors measure different things: the camera recognises colours and shapes, the radar measures distances, the ultrasound helps with parking. Only sensor data fusion ensures that this information is combined and immediately analysed to provide you with a reliable driver assistance system.

However, the principle of sensor data fusion is not only used in cars. It is also used in industry, for example in quality control: various sensors check a product for size, material or temperature. By fusing the sensor data, reliable and fast decisions can be made without a human having to check everything individually. This increases safety, saves time and ensures efficient processes.
