Stories from the Neflental: Compassion makes the world a brighter place

In the Neflental valley, the first rays of sunshine tentatively break through the blanket of mist. The blossom watch has begun. Everywhere, cherry and violet blossoms in pastel pink, lilac and pearly white gently stretch towards the milky morning sun. Fine dew glistens on thick cobwebs floating between gnarled branches. In the distance, shadowy mythical creatures creep cautiously between the trees and there is a quiet magic in the air.

In the middle of this quiet, awakening world, Rosa Periwinkle trudges through the valley. She loves the flower watch more than any other time of year because everything is still quiet and every sound is so special. The moss crackles under her feet and the stones along the strange path shimmer mysteriously. The glowstone hollow is not far away. She knows the way there inside out.

In the heart of the glowstone hollow

The glowing stone hollow lies between the tall, mossy trees. Here it looks as if the stones have caught the light of the stars while they were asleep. They glow dully in the twilight and give everything around them a soft glow. Rosa Periwinkle finds this place wonderfully peaceful. She sits down on a warm stone and listens carefully to the sounds around her.

Suddenly she hears a quiet sob. Curious, she gets up and follows the sound. After just a few steps, she discovers a small creature, almost transparent and with glittering wings. It is sitting all alone between two glowing stones and its whole body is trembling. The mythical creatures in the valley are often shy, but today the little creature looks very sad.

Compassion makes the difference

Rosa Periwinkle approaches slowly and carefully. She kneels down to the creature and asks quietly: "What happened? Why are you so sad?" The little creature wipes her tears and says: "The others are playing over by the cherry blossom tree. But I've been asleep for so long that I'm all alone now. I don't know if anyone will notice me."

Rosa immediately realises how important it is to be kind right now. Sometimes it's the little things that mean a lot. She smiles warmly, places a glowing stone in front of the creature and says: "You are not alone. I'd love to sit with you. We can marvel at the colours of the flowers and tell each other stories."

They sit together for a while. Rosa listens, laughs quietly and tells her own stories. Step by step, the little mythical creature's face brightens. It no longer feels so lonely. The glowstone hollow looks a little brighter in the morning light, because friendship and compassion brighten up the day. After a short while, more mythical creatures come by. They wave and invite them both to play. The little creature beams with joy and Rosa Periwinkle joins in.

Why small actions can make a big difference

In Neflental, everyone knows that a friendly smile, a few quiet words, listening or being there can change everything. Nobody has to do anything big to make the world a little brighter. When everyone in Neflental looks out for others, not only do the flowers bloom in pastel pink, lilac and emerald green, but so do the hearts of the residents. This makes the flower watch a very special time when everyone sticks together and helps each other.

What do we learn from this?

Compassion starts with very small gestures. Each of us can help others, simply by listening and empathising. Small acts make the world a better place because they give warmth and friendship - just as Rosa Immergrün showed in the glowstone hollow during the flower vigil.
