Smart edge devices (Glossary)

Smart edge devices are particularly at home in the Internet of Things, automation and Industry 4.0. They play a central role when it comes to analysing data directly where it is generated - for example on a machine in the factory or on a sensor in the building - rather than sending it to a remote cloud.

A smart edge device, for example, is a modern surveillance camera that not only records images, but also analyses them directly and decides whether a movement is important enough to raise the alarm. This saves time, reduces data volumes and enables fast reactions.

For companies, the use of smart edge devices means greater efficiency and safety. Production data can be processed immediately and errors or faults are recognised more quickly. At the same time, control over sensitive data often remains directly on site, which is also beneficial for data protection and cybersecurity.

In short, smart edge devices turn simple sensors and devices into clever helpers that make machines, processes and digital life easier, faster and safer.
