Socio-technical AI systems (Glossary)

Socio-technical AI systems are a term used in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital society and digital leadership. It describes AI systems that do not work in isolation, but are closely connected to people and their working or living environment. It is therefore not just about the technology, but also about the interaction between people, organisations and artificial intelligence.

One example: In a modern hospital, AI software supports medical staff in making diagnoses and developing treatment plans. The doctors use the AI's suggestions as a valuable aid, but still make the final decisions. The interplay of human expertise, experience and the data analyses of the AI makes the system particularly efficient.

Socio-technical AI systems show that successful digitalisation always requires both: smart technology and open-minded people who break new ground together. Companies and organisations should therefore not only invest in AI technology, but also in their employees and their collaboration with these new systems.
