It refers to the technology that can be used to uniquely identify a person based on their voice. Similar to a fingerprint, every person's voice is unique: pitch, pace of speech, accent and even the smallest peculiarities in speaking behaviour ensure that voice biometrics can reliably distinguish between different people.
In practice, voice biometrics is primarily used in the field of security, for example in telephone banking or customer service hotlines. As soon as a customer calls, a system analyses their voice and compares it with a stored voice sample. If it matches, the person can be unambiguously verified - making a password or PIN superfluous. This makes voice biometrics not only more secure, but also more convenient, as users no longer have to memorise complicated access data.
An illustrative example: You call your bank and are greeted as usual. When you speak, the system automatically recognises your voice. Within a few seconds, you are identified as an authorised customer and can carry out your banking transactions - without any additional security questions. At the same time, voice biometrics protects you from fraudsters who want to pretend to be someone else on the phone, as they cannot imitate your voice exactly.
Overall, voice biometrics helps to make everyday processes safer and easier, both for companies and for customers. The technology is constantly evolving and will be used in even more areas in the future.
