25.3 billion US dollars in sales were generated via Alibaba on Singles' Day, according to the news site The Verge. This means that China's largest internet retailer outperformed its own result from the previous year by USD 7.5 billion. For comparison: eCommerce sales on Thanksgiving weekend (Thangsgiving Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday) totalled "only" USD 8.3 billion in the USA in 2016, according to comScore. Singles' Day is a day for single people that is celebrated every year on 11 November. Eight years ago, Alibaba started to lure customers with heavily discounted special offers on this day. Since then, many competitors have followed suit.
