New data collected by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention published show that the Suicide rates have risen steadily in almost all US states between 1999 and 2016. In 2016, 45,000 people took their own lives, an increase from 2015 (44,193). Half of the states have seen suicide rates increase by more than 30 per cent since 1999, with North Dakota (57.6 per cent), Vermont (48.6 per cent) and New Hampshire (48.3 per cent) seeing the highest percentage increases through 2016.
