29 June 2007, the day on which the iPhone The launch of the first generation of smartphones is often seen as the birthday of the modern smartphone. While this may be true in terms of the (then) revolutionary touchscreen user interface, another, less recognised event probably played an even bigger role in shaping today's smartphone experience.

Ten years ago, on 10 July 2008, Apple introduced the App Store, opening its infamous "Walled Garden" and paving the way for today's app economy. "We look forward to creating a vibrant community of third-party developers with potentially thousands of native applications for iPhone and iPod touch," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs a few months earlier. at the presentation of the iPhone software development kit and thus made it clear that even Jobs, who was certainly one of the greatest optimists, could not imagine that apps would become so bigas they eventually became.

Instead of "thousands of applications", there are App Store Today, there are more than two billion apps in the App Store, and many app developers and publishers have made a fortune developing apps for Apple's mobile ecosystem. As our chart shows, iOS developers have earned more than 100 billion dollars since the launch of the App Store in 2008. This means that 10 July 2008 was the starting point of what was essentially the gold rush of the early 21st century.
