A new United Nations report provides an overview of the global momentum in the fight against single-use plastic. The issue made more headlines than usual this week after a pilot whale in southern Thailand diedafter swallowing more than 80 plastic bags. The new report takes a detailed look at national regulations banning or restricting the use of plastic bags and polystyrene around the world.
The following map shows the status of global regulation to limit the use of plastic bags. In several African countries and in FranceIndia and Mongolia, there are complete or partial bans at national level. Other countries have introduced economic measures such as taxes on plastic bags, including Ireland and Portugal.
