Today is "No Smoking Day" all over the world. In the European Union, the Cigarette production declining. In 2016, almost 300 billion fewer cigarettes were produced than ten years ago. Between 2015 and 2016 alone, production fell by 36 billion. Nevertheless, 527 billion cigarettes were still produced in the EU countries in 2016, which corresponds to over 1,000 cigarettes per inhabitant or around 50 packs of 20 per inhabitant.
According to from Eurostatwhich also recorded production figures in several neighbouring non-EU countries, the largest share of cigarette production in the EU is accounted for by Germany. In 2016, 168 billion cigarettes were produced here, or 32 per cent of EU production. Poland was in second place with 19 per cent of total production and around 99 billion. Romania rounded off the top three with 76.7 billion.
