New data collected by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention published show that the Suicide rates have risen steadily in almost all US states from 1999 to 2016. In 2016, 45,000 people took their own lives, more than in 2015 (44,193). In half of the states, suicide rates have risen by more than 30 per cent since 1999, with North Dakota (57.6 per cent), Vermont (48.6 per cent) and New Hampshire (48.3 per cent) recording the highest percentage increases in 2016.
