The last Monday in May is traditionally Memorial Day in the United States, a nationwide holiday on which citizens remember their soldiers who have died in service to protect the country. The Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day, on which the USA honours all its Veterans but this chart still shows former soldiers - dead or alive - from all American conflicts and their families receiving compensation for their service. Although the Civil War ended more than 150 years ago and the last soldier, Albert Woolson, died in 1956, there is still one woman who receives a Civil War pension. Irene Triplett is the 86-year-old daughter of a Civil War veteran and receives $73.13 per month.
