Although the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan region 38 million inhabitants it is not the largest urban region in the world in terms of area. Every year, Demographia publishes its World Urban Areas Report, whichcontains a wealth of demographic statistics on a large number of cities around the world. It lists not only the population figures of the various cities, but also the largest cities in terms of land area.

While Tokyo-Yokohama ranks first in terms of population, it ranks third in terms of area with 3,300 square miles. The New York-New Jersey-Connecticut metropolitan region claims the title of the largest urban area in terms of area, covering 4,585 square miles.

In second place is Boston-Providence with 3,548 square miles. In terms of population, US cities cannot compete with the booming Asian giants, but in terms of area, they are hard to beat. Eight of the ten largest cities in the world by area are in the United States.
