Tokenisation of digital assets is a term from the categories of blockchain, digital marketplaces and finance. It describes the process by which real or digital assets, such as real estate, works of art or company shares, are represented in the form of digital tokens. These tokens exist on a blockchain, a secure and transparent database.
Tokenisation makes it possible, for example, to divide a property into many small shares. Instead of buying a whole house, you can buy just one share - similar to shares. These shares are bought and sold via digital marketplaces and are often faster and cheaper than traditional property trading.
An illustrative example: a gallery wants to make a famous painting accessible. Instead of selling it to just one person, the painting is tokenised. 1,000 digital tokens then represent a share in the artwork. Interested parties can simply purchase one or more of these tokens online and potentially benefit from the profit if the artwork is later sold at a higher price.
Tokenisation of digital assets thus facilitates investments and makes many assets accessible to a broad public for the first time.
