Trusted Execution Environments (TEE) are a term used in the fields of cybercrime and cybersecurity as well as the Internet of Things and digital transformation. They describe a special technology that helps to securely process particularly sensitive data or processes on computers, smartphones or other devices.
A Trusted Execution Environment is like a specially protected vault within a chip. Data or programmes can run in this vault without being accessed by hackers or malware, even if the rest of the system has already been attacked. This makes it possible to better protect confidential information - such as passwords, payment data or secret company data.
A practical example: when making mobile payments with a smartphone, your card data is not only protected by a PIN, but is also stored in encrypted form in the device's Trusted Execution Environment. Even if someone gains access to the phone's normal memory, this data remains secure in the TEE.
For companies and private users, a trusted execution environment therefore offers additional protection against data misuse and strengthens trust in digital processes and products.
