Last year, 46 US police officers were of offenders on duty killed47 died as a result of an accident, according to new figures of the FBI. The average age was 38 and the average length of service with the law enforcement agencies was 11 years. 43 of the police officers killed by criminals were men, three were women. Despite the high number of fatalities, last year's 93 deaths are a significant decrease from 2016, when 118 officers died in the line of duty. That year saw the highest number of deaths at the hands of criminals since 2011, when 72 officers died.
In terms of the circumstances of the incidents in 2017, 21 deaths were due to investigation or enforcement action, while six officers died in pursuits. Five died during ambushes and four during arrests.
