Following the recent scandals on Facebook, more and more people are wondering whether the social media in their current form ultimately do more harm than good, all things considered. After all, they encourage smartphone addiction, have the potential to sow division and make us vulnerable to customised manipulation attempts by companies like Cambridge Analytica.
Even teenagers, who are supposedly the most avid fans of Snapchat, Instagram and the like, seem to have mixed feelings about social media these days. According to a recent Pew Research study 24 per cent of teenagers (aged 13 to 17) in the United States believe that social media has a mostly negative impact on their generation, while only 31 per cent believe that the impact is mostly positive.
The reasons for teenagers' growing scepticism towards social networks are varied, but the spread of bullying and rumours on social media is the biggest annoyance for young Americans.
