Ambient intelligence is particularly at home in the fields of automation, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence. The term describes the ability of systems to perceive and understand their environment and react accordingly. The aim is to make our lives and work easier and more efficient through clever technology.
This is done by sensors, cameras or other devices continuously collecting data from the environment. This information is analysed by intelligent programs and used to automatically carry out appropriate actions. For example, an environmentally intelligent office recognises how much light there is in the room, how many people are present and automatically adjusts the lighting or temperature accordingly.
Another example: In a smart home, a heating system learns when the residents normally come home. It then ensures the right temperature in good time without anyone having to flick the switch. Ambient intelligence thus saves energy and increases comfort.
In short: ambient intelligence is the smart linking of sensors and artificial intelligence that supports us unnoticed in many areas of life and makes our environment "adaptive".
